On February 25, 2021, the Land and Logistic Division of Ministry of Transport organised a Data Collection/Stakeholder Workshop for Stocktaking Report Preparation at the Ministry of Transport in Putrajaya, Malaysia.

The workshop was attended by 29 participants, with representatives from various ministries, government linked agencies and private sector in Malaysia. It was officiated by the Head of National Key Resource Area (NKRA) Unit from the Ministry of Transport: Mr. Veejandran Ramdas.

Ms. Julia Nagel, Advisor in the GIZ Energy Efficiency and Climate Change Mitigation in the Land Transport Sector in the ASEAN Region project introduced the project and its past and future work in Malaysia before Mr. Tali Trigg (Project Team Leader) presented the objectives of the workshop: an input process for data collection and stakeholder meeting for the preparation of a Stocktaking Report for Malaysia.

The report intends to contribute an updated picture of the transport sector and transport-related greenhouse gas emissions and mitigation policies in Malaysia. It follows the same methodology as the stocktaking reports for Vietnam and Thailand.

The local transport expert Professor Dr. Horizon Gitano-Briggs led through the workshop by addressing the technological and policy gaps identified in the transportation system in Malaysia based on initial research activities and presented first suggestions how to improve the current transportation issues.

Participants were divided into groups to discuss on policy and data availability covering the fields of: Vehicle Technologies, Land Usage and Planning and Standards & Measurements. Responsible parties, existing policies and databases, and gaps were identified and recommendations for improvement were given. The outcomes and results were discussed in plenary and will be included in further research and elaboration of the stocktaking report for Malaysia´s transport sector.

The stocktaking report will be finalised over the next two month and will serve not only policy-makers, but also researchers, the general public, international donors, and other stakeholders as a reference document for sustainable transport and climate change in Malaysia.
